Floortime™ Program
CDM offers a unique intervention program for children diagnosed with autism, developmental delays, and sensory integration disorders utilizing a developmental approach (DIR) through Floortime™ methods.
D (Developmental): Focus on mastering developmental milestones including:
1. attending and remaining calm and regulated
2. engaging and relating to others
3. initiating and responding to all types of communication
4. engaging in shared social problem-solving and intentional behavior
5. using ideas to communicate needs and think and play creatively
6. building bridges between ideas in logical ways
I (Individual Difference): Considers the unique biologically-based ways each child takes in, regulates, responds to, and comprehends sensations such as sound, touch, and the planning and sequencing of actions and ideas.
R (Relationship-based): Uses relationships as the basis for developing and mastering developmental milestones (Floortime™)
A specific technique to both follow the child's natural emotional interests (lead) and at the same time challenge the child towards greater and greater mastery of the social, emotional and intellectual capacities. With young children these playful interactions may occur on the "floor", but go on to include conversations and interactions in other places. Because Floortime harnesses the power of a child"s motivation we are more likely to engage his attention and tune in to his interests and desires thereby developing his ability to interact and relate in meaningful, spontaneous, flexible and warm ways.
Driven by the results of an initial assessment, a suggested program for intervention will be developed. Parents join their child in Floortime sessions to learn and practice strategies to support their child's development. Sessions typically last 1 1/2 hours and include "discussion" time at the end of each session to review progress. Parents are often suggested strategies to practice at home during various daily activities such as bathing, playground time, meals, etc. Floortime™ sessions also work well in group settings or with "play dates" or siblings.
Interesting tidbit: Children's Developmental Milestones is the first and, so far, only agency providing the DIR/Floortime model in Ventura County!
